Athens, December 13, 1995. A small group of young artists launch the first CHEAPART exhibition.
The first press releases articulate a new visual language with slogans and phrases that voice its views and perspectives. CHEAPART quickly shifts from an art movement to the organization that liberated artwork from eliticity, redefining art a cultural necessity for all. The following 25 years marked a long course of research connected to experimental, creative practice, and the development of national and international networks of art communities and audiences. CHEAPART’s activity has a large impact on the latter half of the 90s in Greece, leading the organization to its second phase of innovation for the 21st century.

During this time, CHEAPART prioritized the development of prototype cultural systems and organizations such as ARTmART, TAF and CAMP, while moving towards implementing festivals and programs such as Back to Athens and Athens Intersection; case studies for the younger generation. It is important to note that a number of ongoing cultural activities in Greece that draw from the ideas and dynamics of CHEAPART, enrich today’s contemporary Athenian art scene. CHEAPART considers its most valued work since 1995 to be the active support of many young artists and their integration to the art community, based on individual capabilities and priorities.

This year’s exhibition presents a retrospective from 1995 to today, featuring the work of artists that participated in the very first CHEAPART exhibition. The Wall of Fame, who were the pioneers of the art movement of the 90's, of the newly emerged CHEAPART?
